Lord Howe Island, being the most Southern Coral Reef in the pacific, is home to a plethora of tropical and temperate fish and a rich diversity of endemic marine life, only found on the Island. The underwater terrain consists of coral archways, gutters and cervices, soft coral gardens, bomboras, walls, swim-throughs and caves. The variety of marine life is what makes Lord Howe so unique and most of our divers will usually have encounters with schools of Trevally and Kingfish, Anemone fish, colourful Wrasse, Butterfly Cod, Morwong, Angelfish, Galapagos Whaler Sharks, stingrays, Morays, Spanish Dancers and Nudibranchs just to name a few.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO COME? Lord Howe's season starts from September right through until May. The diving is spectacular all year round, however, the peak diving season is Dec-March when the warm, blue currents pass through and visibility is at its best.
WHAT TEMPERATURE IS THE WATER? The warmest water can be found in our Summer months, usually around 24-26 degrees. Sept - Dec ranges between 19-22 degrees.
WHAT IS THE VISIBILITY? 10-15m during colder months, and 25-35m from December onward. This is due to the East Australian Current, which arrives mid Summer from the Great Barrier Reef.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? Howea Divers supply 5mm steamers and hoods are available for the colder months. If you feel the cold it may be worth bringing along a vest/gloves/booties.
DO I NEED TO BOOK AHEAD? Bookings are essential to guarantee your spot on our boat as we are only surveyed for 10 divers. Packages are available at a discount to suit all diving levels.
WHERE WILL WE DIVE? Lord Howe has over 60 dive sites scattered around the Island, including sheltered lagoon sites, Front reef, Malabar and Admiralty Island areas. All our local dives locations only take less than a 15 minute boat ride, excluding Balls Pyramid which lies 23km to the South East of LHI. Sites will be decided on the morning of the dives due to weather conditions. Howea Divers makes every effort to show you a new dive site each time you dive with us.
WHAT IF I HAVENT DIVED IN A WHILE? No worries, our friendly and experienced crew will run you through a Refresher to get your confidence back up. We can start off with some shallow lagoon dives before advancing to the outer reefs.
WHAT ABOUT CANCELATION? Howea Divers strive to get you out on your tours, however sometimes due to weather, numbers or unforeseen circumstances we may have to reschedule your trip. For more information please refer to our Terms and Conditions page here.
WHERE SHOULD I STAY AND EAT? You can find a list of accommodation and dining options on the Lord Howe Island Tourism website listed below. There are many different types available to suit your taste and budget. If you have brought your own gear to the island, Howea Divers can pick it up from your accommodation and drop it back for your departure, all clean and dry. http://www.lordhoweisland.info
